What is Electromyography (EMG) for?
To diagnoseneurological and neuromuscular problems.
What doe the test involve?
Small electrical stimuli are given to the nerves to determine their response. Electrodes are placed on the skin or sometimes a wire or needle electrode is placed directly in the muscle to determine its response.
Does it hurt?
It is annoying but tolerable.
How long does it take?
This depends on the pathology of the patient, but generally, the average time is between 10 minutes and half an hour.
Do you have to be physically prepared?
No previous preparation is necessary excepthaving previously fasted.
Is the test appropriate fro pregnant women?
Yes, it is.
After doing this test can I go straight back to my normal activities?
Yes, you can. If a needle electrode was inserted in the muscle the muscle may be a little sore, but generally it is only sore for a few minutes after the needle has been inserted.
