Holter and Ergometric Monitoring Unit

Presentation

Holter monitoring makes a continuous record of the heart’s electrical activity for 24 or 48 hours. A very small portable device is used to store this information, which is later analysed. It is a very useful test for patients who have cardiac arrhythmia or for studying the heart rate. This examination is mainly used for patients that have arrhythmias (irregularities in the heartbeat), silent ischemia (deficiency of flow and oxygen due to functional constriction or obstruction of blood vessels), fainting and chest pain.

Ergometric monitoring consists in taking a continuous electrocardiographic recording of the patient while they carry out a dynamic physical exercise with increasing intensity. The results can be used to diagnose ischemic heart disease, although it has other applications such as detecting heartbeat irregularities, studying the pressure response during physical exercise and assessing the cardiologic capacity of the patient.

Health Assistance
The Cardiology Service of the Foundation is composed of these two heart examination units (Holter and Ergometric monitoring). It has two specialised doctors and the corresponding nursing staff.

In 1982 the service began carrying out tests for the Catalan Health Institute (ICS) as well as for various hospitals from the public hospital network (XHUP).

To adapt to the current necessities of the centres, a new service is now available that carries out exercise tests for a quick diagnosis of chest pain.

The service performs 12,000 examinations annually and is one of the centres of Catalonia that carries out most examinations. It is the main provider of this test of the Catalan Health Institute.
